The Lions bested Middlesex RFC with a strong 39 – 13 victory in the Regional Final yesterday to take the trophy as the best team in the Northeast United States. Lions are now the top seed from this region in the DII Nationals in May 2011.
Lions defeat Newport 64-20, Danny Kroll contributing 39 points and earning a chandelier while Patrick H McJury flew in from Florida to captain us. Champagne was spraying at Randall’s Island as the mighty Village Lions won first place in MET NY DII Rugby with a 38-26 bonus point victory over previously undefeated Lansdowne last Saturday.
The mighty Killer Bs then capped their undefeated season with a come from behind 17-11 victory over a very strong Lansdowne outfit.
The regular season stats are outstanding as the Lions averaged 44.6 points per game in the regular season, their points haul more than any DII team in the nation. The Killer Bs defensive figures are just as impressive, letting in only 3 tries all year for 23 points – an average of less than 3 points a game from the opposition.
Saturday was a great club day with great performances from every one of the over 40 players who took the field and great support from old boys, women and friends of the club. The Lions now head to the regional finals with the first challenge this Saturday 1pm at Randall’s Island vs a strong Newport side.
