Village Lions Women 19, Monmouth 7

Having the steady rain exacerbate Randall's Island's already stellar field conditions, the Village Leonas truly battled to a 19-7 victory over Monmouth, improving to 2-0 in the Met NY. All of the Lions' scores came in the second half, while the north Jersey squad failed to post any points in the second stanza.

First Half

The Lions' first half was marked by penalties and a series of mental errors, which counteracted a number of solid phases to the try line. Despite good defense and the majority of possession in the Lions' favor, it was Monmouth who pushed over for the half's lone try about halfway through and slotted the conversion, 7-0.

Second Half

In the second half, the Lions found the finishing touches. About 10 minutes in, rookie prop Kelly Rogers dotted down a forward try that mauled its way over the line. Alli Hinke slotted the conversion, 7 all.

The go-ahead points came about 20 minutes in when #8, Jess Houser, picked from the base of the ruck and dished to flyhalf Jackie Finlan, who found a hole for 40 meters before centering the try. Alli made the easy conversion, 14-7.

The final try came in minute 68, as second row Lisa Dummeyer stole a Monmouth lineout on their 40m. The ball made its way to flanker Trina Lear, who legged out the defense for the 30-meter try, 19-7.

With 12 minutes to go, Monmouth picked it up and perpetually pressured the tryline. Stalwart defense prevented a score, in fact at least two tries were held up on the day. A final kick to touch and the whistle blew.

Honors

Trina Lear was named Woman of the Match, and Becca Asser was named Silent Force.
