The 30th league season for the Village Lions represents a rebirth for the club. To punctuate the new era, Mike Tagliaferro has been appointed by Coach Nic Clapinson as the Men’s Side Captain, with Nick Alexander as Vice-Captain.
Both veterans of the VLRFC, they were each in turn humble on the occasion of their appointment.
“I’m very proud to accept the position of Captain for the Village Lions Men’s XV with Nick Alexander as my VC,” shared Tagliaferro who goes by the simple nickname, Tag. “This is my fifth year with the Lions and this club means a lot to me. I’ve battled on the field with a lot of brothers over the years and have now spent more time with the Lions than any other team in my 14 years of rugby.”
“Our club has been going through a rough stretch and I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping lead us out of it.“
The 28 year old Tag hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan and was a member of the year one RUNY squad. Now a Financial Analyst at The Topps Company – one of the top employers for Village Lions – the backrower played college rugby for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
“Our club has been going through a rough stretch,” continued Tag, “and I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping lead us out of it. Most of you know me and my leadership style well and I have no intention of changing as captain. You can count on me to lead by example, work my ass off and support everyone on and off the field. Coach Nic is taking this team in the right direction, stay dedicated and let’s put the work in to start winning some damn games.”
Nick Alexander is hometown hero from New York City. The Fordham Prep grad played his college rugby for Hobart, and works in real estate for the Alexander Development Group
“Victory is just beyond the gate, now we need to crash through it.”
“I am thankful for the opportunity to lead my teammates against our opposition,” offered Nick. “I will continue to work to the best of my ability on and off the field in order to put us in winning positions. Victory is just beyond the gate, now we need to crash through it.”
The Lions take on Lansdowne this Saturday, September 14, 2019, on Randall’s Island Field 75. Kickoff is at 12 noon ET.
