Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York and Village Lions RFC Announce
Hell Gate Sevens 2018 Tournament Partnership

Partnership marks the third consecutive year Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York will present the annual New York City sevens tournament

NEW YORK (June 18, 2018) — The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY), the representative office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, announced today that it will again  be the title sponsor of Hell Gate 7s, a premier annual rugby sevens tournament and the only summer sevens rugby tournament held in New York City. This is the third consecutive year that HKETONY will be the tournament’s title sponsor and continues the office’s partnership with the Village Lions Rugby Football Club of New York.

“Hong Kong is home to the world’s premier rugby sevens tournament – the Hong Kong Sevens – which celebrated its 43rd anniversary this year. Today, the tournament attracts the best and greatest rugby players and thousands of fans from every corner of the world to Hong Kong Stadium every year. HKETONY is pleased to sponsor the Hell Gate 7s to forge closer sports ties between Hong Kong and the US,” Joanne Chu, Director of HKETONY, said.

Rugby is the fastest growing sport in the USA, with rapid development occurring at the university, amateur and professional level. Earlier this year, Major League Rugby kicked off its inaugural season with seven teams located across the United States, with plans for its New York professional team, Rugby United New York, to join the league for the 2019 season. In July of this year, the Rugby World Cup 7s tournament will be held for the first time ever in the United States, with 40 international teams, including one from Hong Kong, vying for the championship in San Francisco.

“Hell Gate 7s is truly a rugby experience unlike any other. Nowhere else this summer will you find a collection of some of the top clubs and organizations from the Northeast and beyond playing elite level rugby in front of the iconic New York City skyline backdrop,” said Quin Works, President of Village Lions RFC. “Over the last couple of years, HKETONY has been instrumental in the success and growth of Hell Gate 7s and we couldn’t be more ecstatic to extend our partnership with this top notch organization. As rugby 7s continues its rapid global expansion, the Village Lions are excited to work with HKETONY to continue to build the bridge between the Hong Kong and New York rugby communities.”

The Hell Gate 7s presented by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York will take place on Randall’s Island in New York City on Saturday, June 23, 2018. This year’s tournament will host teams high school aged and older across six divisions including: Men’s and Women’s Club, Men’s and Women’s Social and Boys and Girls U18/HS. Registration for the tournament is now open and teams interested in competing at the 2018 Hell Gate 7s Tournament can register and obtain more information at http://hellgatesevens.com.
