Sevens rugby
Women's+ 7s
The summer game for the Women's+ side of the pride.
About the side
Coached by James Johnston, the Women's+ sevens side plays through the summer in the Club division of the EGU Summer Sevens Series: seven players a side, seven minute halves, and a full tournament in a single day.
The side captured the Empire GU Championship Series title in 2019, and has taken steps toward competing at the highest level of regional sevens in the Northeast Sevens Championship Series qualifier.
Ilona Maher played a summer of sevens for the Lions while she was a student at Quinnipiac, before going on to represent the United States.
The squad pairs a core of players from the Women's+ 15s with a number of Play Rugby USA alumni.

Head coach
James Johnston
James has been playing rugby since 2009, when he joined his high school team after being cut from lacrosse. He played 15s and 7s in college at Elon University, including a trip to the National Collegiate 7s tournament. Before joining the Lions in 2016, he played with the Maryland Exiles.
He played for the Lions through 2022 and served as men's vice president, then retired from playing that year and began as an assistant coach with the Women's+ side. He took over as head coach later that spring.
James also runs the Deep Fried Sevens tournament, and tours socially with the NY Pizza Rats, Bodega Cats and Hermanos de Leche.
